Scripts for “Behind the Lyrics: The ’70s!”

The Stories Behind
the Song Characters We Love!

Six Short Fiction Plays

If you’ve hit THIS page, you’re here to look at the scripts.
Below, you’ll find all six scripts as PDFs in the order I currently imagine the show, followed by the music I envision afterward (or a live version of it).
If you prefer them in MSWord format to PDF, let me know and I can send that.

The wording on links below purposely doesn’t say what song it is, because I don’t want to ruin the surprise of that when you read each script.
Some are really obvious early in the reading and others not so much; if you guess #5 before seeing the reference at the bottom, you’re in a tiny minority!  But then it makes sense.

The titles are mostly for internal reference; unless they are listed in the playbill, the audience won’t even know them.

Act I:

Story 1:  “Overheard in a Seaside Tavern”       Script    Music

Story 2:  “Before Show Night”          Script    Music

Story 3:  “September Again”             Script    Music

Act II:

Story 4:  “Delilah’s Choice”                Script    Music

Story 5:  “Dad’s Visit”                         Script    Music

Story 6:  “Redemption”                      Script    Music

How many actors does the show require?  Because of the multiple unrelated scenes, you could have a nice big cast where people are main characters in only one or two scenes.  Or, crunching the numbers, you could pull this off with as few as seven actors, though at least one or two more would probably be beneficial.

Could the songs be shortened to make paying for song rights more affordable?  Yes.  It’s not quite as satisfying, but if it made the difference between doing this or not, we could get the musical parts down to 4-6 lines just to scratch the itch of hearing a key part of the song.
